Encouraging the development of human understanding

Calgary Waldorf School students are taught French and German from Grades One through Nine. Beyond the obvious benefits of learning multiple languages, the process also teaches children to be patient, to be open, to be confident and lean in to the unfamiliar, and to expand their realm of experience.

Through story, song, rhyme, and movement, children in the early grades become acquainted with different cultures and widen their horizon of human understanding by looking at the world through the eyes of others. Grammar and reading begin with imaginative games in grade four and continue more formally in the higher grades. The children occasionally present short plays, songs, and poems in another language at school assemblies.
