Educating Children For The Journey: Jack Petrash at TEDx Rock Creek Park

PREPARING FOR LIFE

The New York Times sparked national media coverage with its front page story on why Silicon Valley parents are turning to Waldorf education.

This film picks up where that story left off. Preparing for Life takes viewers inside the Waldorf School of the Peninsula where the focus is on developing the capacities for creativity, resilience, innovative thinking, and social and emotional intelligence over rote learning. Entrepreneurs, Stanford researchers, investment bankers, and parents who run some of the largest hi-tech companies in the world, weigh-in on what children need to navigate the challenges of the 21st Century in order to find success, purpose, and joy in their lives.

WALDORF EDUCATION ON THE SIMPSONS!

Jack Petrash at the 2014 CWS Gateways Conference

The following videos are a series cut from an interview conducted with Jack Petrash in April 2014 at the Calgary Waldorf School Gateways Conference.

JACK PETRASH has been a Waldorf teacher for over 30 years, with most of that time at the Washington, DC school. He is currently taking his 4th Class on the extended journey together from Grade One through Grade Eight. Jack is also a teacher of teachers, and the founder and director of the Nova Institute, an organization that works to build a bridge between mainstream education and Waldorf education and to develop parents’ and teachers’ deeper understanding of children. He is the author of “Understanding Waldorf Education: Teaching from the Inside Out” and his recent TEDx talk on “Preparing Children for the Journey” has been seen by many parents and teachers in Waldorf communities in North America. As well, Jack has worked extensively with parent education, particularly with fathers. His parenting pieces have appeared in the Washington Post, on National Public Radio, etc. He is also the author of Navigating the Terrain of Childhood: A Guidebook for Meaningful Parenting and Heartfelt Discipline and of Covering Home: Lessons on the Art of Fathering from the Game of Baseball (which won a National Parenting Publications’ Gold Award). Jack and his wife Carol (now grandparents as well) have raised three children, all of whom have been Waldorf students from Preschool through Grade Twelve.

EURYTHMY FLASH MOB IN VIENNA FOR STEINER’S 150 BIRTHDAY VIDEO: EURYTHMY ON THE ST. STEPHANSPLATZ IN VIENNA

The last eurythmy flashmob article and video we shared with you was from Cologne and coincided with the start of the Rudolf Steiner Express, a special train that journeyed across Europe to Rudolf Steiner’s birthplace.

The exhibition “Rudolf Steiner: Alchemy of the Everyday” in Vienna organized a flashmob on the St. Stephansplatz in Vienna to coincide with the opening of the exhibition, which itself coincided with the sesquicentennial celebration of Rudolf Steiner’s birthday. The flashmob was a brilliant success and was enjoyed by all…as you can see.

Especially nice to see were all the children (of all ages!) participating and everyone had a smile.
